Summerville Town Council unanimously voted to purchase LED lights for the public parking garage next to Town Hall, making the facility more energy- and cost-efficient.
The council approved a purchase order for 96 LED lights from local distributor City Electric Supply at the Town Finance Committee meeting Monday. The switch will cost $30,816 of hospitality tax funds, although SCE&G will return more than half of the expenses – $16,800 – in rebate.
Councilmembers joked at the high price tag of the lights, but LED lights are known to last 25 times longer and use at least 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent light bulbs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
The Finance Committee also authorized the sale of two surplus police vehicles to the Town of Ridgeville for a discounted price. Normally the cars are sold for $2,000 to $3,000, according to police officials, but these vehicles will be sold for $1,500.
“I think it’s good business to help local municipalities,” said Councilman Aaron Brown.
During the meeting the Council also authorized the release of $5,000 of budgeted hospitality tax funds to the Oakbrook Civic Association for the upcoming Oakbrook Ashley Riverfest, which is taking place May 3.
According to Councilman Bob Jackson, who is one of the main organizers of the event, the funds will be used for advertising, portable restrooms and police monitoring.
