Chapman named to all-state team

  • Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Lady Green Wave senior Heather Chapman received both all-state and all-region honors this season.

Heather Chapman began her career with the Lady Green Wave basketball team as an outsider but ends it as a team leader.

Chapman transferred to Summerville High School from Ohio for her junior season last school year. It was clear to coaches she had talent but the Green Wave already had several other players who were both skilled and versatile so the coaches weren’t sure what Chapman’s role would be.

Accurate shooting and an ability to find the ball helped her quickly work her way into the Summerville lineup. As chemistry developed between Chapman and her new teammates, her role on the team became more and more important.

“Heather came to us as a very good player who was uncomfortable in our system,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “What’s impressive is that she worked beyond the coaching staff’s requirements on both her game and her physical conditioning to become a driving force behind what makes our system tick. She is a great kid who understands hard work, team basketball, and what it takes to win. We will miss her but are blessed to have her as part of our basketball family.”

By the end of her junior season Chapman was among the team’s leading scorers. As a senior, the energy she brought to the floor helped the Lady Green Wave to its most successful season in years. She also led the team in scoring and rebounding.

During her senior season, Chapman averaged 14 points per game, 7.7 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Her efforts didn’t go unnoticed as she was one of only 16 players in the state named to the Class AAAA Girls’ All-state team.

Dekejya Cohen of West Ashley was named the girls’ 4-A Player of the Year. Deyja Brown of Colleton County and Makayla Dudley of Cane Bay are the other Lowcountry representatives on the all-state team.

Brown was also named the Region 8-AAAA Girls Player of the Year.

Chapman is one of four Summerville players named to the Region 8-AAAA Girls All-region Team. Senior Zuri Green and juniors Rodnesha Capers and Ashley Green also received all-region honors.

Ashley Ridge players Shelby Daly, Ariel Glover and Kelly Cousins were also named all-region. Jailah Melvin and Erika Cobb represent Fort Dorchester on the all-region team.

Legare was named the region Coach of the Year.
