N. Charleston, Summerville fire to automatically aid

  • Friday, March 14, 2014

The North Charleston Fire Department will soon begin responding to fires within Summerville’s jurisdiction after Town Council authorized a new agreement Wednesday.

At the March Town Council meeting, Council unanimously approved the mayor to “execute an interlocal agreement for automatic aid and response between the Town of Summerville and the City of North Charleston.”

According to Summerville Fire Department Chief Richard Waring, the agreement will allow the two municipalities to share fire response resources.

He said whenever a call comes into the 911 Dispatch Center, the dispatchers will automatically send whichever fire department is closer to the scene.

Chief Waring said he has been working toward this collaboration with Chief Gregory Bulanow, North Charleston Fire Department, for the past six months. SFD has been adopting procedures similar to NCFD so when the departments work together “they will work seamlessly,” he said.

The City of North Charleston also has to approve the agreement before it’s put into action. According to Linda King at the North Charleston Clerk of Council’s office, the North Charleston Public Safety Committee will hear the request on March 20 and the item to be on the council’s agenda for approval March 27.
