As students and staff near the end of the school year it appears Dorchester District Two is up to date on its goals and objectives, said Superintendent Joseph Pye.
At Monday night’s board meeting Pye delivered his mid-year goals update to the board and fellow meeting attendees.
“We are basically on schedule or ahead of schedule on everything,” Pye said.
Pye prepared a list of 16 goals total that the district is trying to attain this year. Each goal was divided into three categorical goals: to execute an innovative curriculum in the schools; to provide human, financial and physical resources; and to maintain a safe and secure environment for everyone in the district.
This year Pye said middle schools have provided increased opportunities for their students to participate in high school courses, particularly in geometry and algebra. There are now geometry teachers on site at every middle school.
“The numbers in algebra and geometry are increasing,” he said.
Pye also reported an increase in children participating in the Gifted and Talented programs at DD2 schools, as well as an increase in students enrolling in Advanced Placement and Dual Credit classes.
There is an ongoing strategy to require tutoring sessions for students in all grades in order for them to earn the right to retake tests at school.
“They must go to tutoring in order to retake the test, so you have to earn the privilege to retake the test and relearn the material,” Pye said. “A child’s grade should not be what they made on the test, it should be what they know.”
Another ongoing strategy is developing a way to increase the on-time graduation rate, particularly in high schools. Pye said changes in curriculum and tutoring are being made to improve graduation rates.
Pye is particularly impressed with how the district’s Early College Program went last summer. In Spring 2013 DD2 implemented the Early College Program, which opened for summer. The success in the summer school was a 99 percent success rate.
“That is phenomenal,” Pye said. “Obviously the kids are responding and parents are buying into it. That rate is really high.”
Other goals involve finding ways to work with community and business partnerships to support DD2. The district is also encouraging the public to participate in the creation of budget and district needs.
