Beware of telephone ‘jury duty’ scam

  • Wednesday, March 19, 2014

Dorchester County Sheriff’s deputies recently responded to a report of someone impersonating a police officer to perpetrate a confidence game.

The victim told police he got a message on his answering machine from someone saying he was Lt. John Martin of the DCSO saying he needed to speak with the victim.

The victim immediately returned the phone call and “Martin” told him he had to buy a green dot MoneyPak card for $610 immediately then call him back with the card number. The victim was told this was to prevent a warrant from being issued regarding a jury duty mishap.

The victim went right out, bought the card and called back with the number. He asked for “Martin’s” badge number, which he was told was “709” but when he asked if he could call DCSO to verity, he was told “no, if you hang up it will start the process all over.” So the victim gave the imposter the card number and then he called the Sheriff’s office to verify only to discover there is no such deputy.

DCSO is investigating.
