Summerville High School senior Anya Bunao has signed a national letter of intent to run track and cross country for Wofford College.
“I like the small-school feel and the team seems really close,” Bunao said at the March 12 signing. “The coach seemed to have a lot of insight regarding how he could make me a better runner, which is something I’m really interested in. I’m excited about running at the college level and being challenged more. I’m looking forward to being surrounded by others who love the sport like I do.”
Bunao has been a staple for the Green Wave running programs for the past several seasons, steadily earning Summerville points in the 5K, mile, two-mile and relay events. She has been a member of multiple track and cross country region championship teams.
During her senior cross county season, she set a new personal record of 19:04 at the Mullet Hall meet. Her record in the 800 is a 2:28 and she has run a 5:25 mile.
Her goals this track season include dropping her time in the mile and helping the Lady Green Wave 4x800 relay team return to the state meet.
Last season she teamed up with Abby Bozarth, Abigail Butler and Maria Edwards for a seventh-place finish in the relay at the Class AAAA championships.
This year, she is teaming up with Bozarth, Sommer Mackenzie and Renee Bourgeois for the 4x800.
Bunao serves as Senior Class President at SHS.
She is interested in pursuing an entrepreneurial career so she plans to major in business and would like to attend graduate school at USC to study international business.
