Journal Scene captures SCPA General Excellence honor

The Summerville Journal Scene won second place in General Excellence in the 2013 South Carolina Press Association Awards. The SCPA’s annual awards banquet was held Saturday in Columbia.

Summerville Communications – The Journal Scene, The Berkeley Independent and The Gazette – captured a combined 26 SCPA awards for writing, design and photography. The Journal Scene’s General Excellence win came in the Two-to-Three Times Weekly Division.

Journal Scene Managing Editor Anne Sheehan captured two first place wins, in News Feature Writing and Profile Feature Writing.

She also won third place in the Series of Articles category.

Sports writer Roger Lee won a first place honor for Sports Action Photo, a second place finish in the same category, and a second place in the Sports Feature Photo category.

Among Rob Gantt’s three awards was a first place finish for Sports Page Design Portfolio for The Journal Scene.

Former Journal Scene Executive Editor Judy Watts won second place in Page One Design Portfolio.

Former staff writer Leslie Cantu won a first, second and third place award in the respective categories of Short Story, Reporting in Depth, and News Feature Writing.
