Summervillians know their BBQ

Pot Belly Cookers and Dennis Jarrett of Summerville is the state Grand Champion of the The Commissioners Cup BBQ Cook Off & Festival.

Jarrett won $600 and an automatic bid to the World Food Championship in Las Vegas.

The South Carolina Department of Agriculture hosted the two-day competition, where 40 teams took part in the “Anything Butt” contest featuring chicken wings, and the State Championship featuring Boston Butts and pork ribs.

However, Jarrett was not the only local winner.

Razorbacks BBQ and Jason Peterson of Summerville came in second for pork butts and a $600 prize and Some-R-Swine and Seth Watari of Summerville came in third for pork ribs and a $300 prize.

Other 2014 Winners and Awards:

Reserve Champion:

On the Spot BBQ – Ronnie Bishop, Greenwood, 300

Boston Butts:

1st Place – Blind Swine BBQ – Mike Sanders, Greenwood, $1,000

3rd Place – Piggy Backs BBQ – Mitchell Sims, Olanta, $300

Pork Ribs:

1st Place – Hotlanta – Phillip Miles, Lake City, $1,000

2nd Place – Fire and Smoke Shak – Jack Fulton, Monks Corner, $600

People’s Choice:

Hog-N-Around – Trey Hoey, Cayce, $300

Anything Butt:

LowCountry Barbecue & Catering – Lou Hutto, Columbia, $300

In addition to a cash prize, winners in all categories of the Commissioners Cup received trophies. The Southern Barbecue Network sanctioned the event.
