Anne Dunning Thomas
Native Summervillian and world traveler Anne Dunning Thomas left this world on her mother’s birthday March 18, 2014.
Anne was born at home on July 6, 1934 to Charles Henry and Henriette Nolte Dunning, the last of nine children.
Anne is survived by children, Laura Thomas Richardson (David), Millie Thomas and Joe M. Thomas Jr. (Melody); grandchildren, Michelle Chapman, Anthony Richardson, Liana Amador, Emilie Haas, Thomas Singleton and Chelsea Thomas; nine great grandchildren; her remaining brother, Charles Dunning, and special friend, Susan “Sue” Sims.
She was predeceased by her husband Joe M. Thomas; their daughter, Patricia Joyce “Joy” Thomas; her parents; sisters, Margaret, Juliet, Frances, Elsa, Clara and Mary; brother, John Dunning and son-in-law Bobby Jumper.
Our mother was a devoted wife who followed her husband around the world to South Carolina, North Carolina, California, Michigan, Louisiana, France and Germany. Following our father’s retirement from the Air Force, they lived for 9 years in Cairo, Egypt before retiring to Sumter, SC. Mama was an amazing mother who shared the love of reading, needle work, gardening and cats with her children. She made each move to a new house an exciting adventure. Though we lost her to dementia, we will always love and miss her.
Services were held on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at 2 p.m. at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Summerville, SC. Burial was private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Alzheimers and Dementia Foundation, the Feline Freedom Coalition – www.felinefreedom.org, or plant a tree or shrub in her honor.
The family would like to thank the staff at Tuomey Hospital and Tuomey Hospice Services for their care in mama’s final days. Arrangements by Parks Funeral Home, 130 West 1st North Street, Summerville, SC 29483. www.parksfuneralhome.com.
