Eighth-grader Gabby Lawrence led the Fort Dorchester softball team to a 4-1 win over Cane Bay Tuesday.
“Gabby pitched a two-hitter,” Lady Patriot coach Shae Mansor said. “The other girls did a good job backing her up. We had a lot of energy on defense and did a good job going after the ball.”
Lawrence only walked three batters during the game.
Meanwhile, the Patriots (3-7) managed seven hits. Senior Savannah Ferguson was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and a run scored. Madison Wren was 2 for 4 and Alison Muschek reached base three times and had an RBI.
Aschlyn Hutto and Morgan Snyder had the hits for Cane Bay (1-4) and Beth Bourgeois suffered the pitching loss for the Lady Cobras.
Cane Bay got on the scoreboard first. Henry walked in the top of the second and Snyder doubled to drive her in.
Fort Dorchester answered by scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame. Lawrence reached on an error and moved to third on a hit by Bricelin Balcer. Leadoff batter Kayla Holladay then laid down a sacrifice bunt to push a run across. Alison Muschek followed with a fielder’s choice to drive in Balcer.
The Pats added a pair of runs in the third. Fort Dorchester loaded the bases when Madison Ferguson and Savannah Ferguson singled and Erica Lawson was hit by a pitch. Lawrence was then hit by a pitch to plate Madison. Savannah scored on a blooper that fell between the catcher and the pitcher’s circle.
The Cobras put four runners on base the next two innings, but left three of them stranded.
Fort Dorchester hosts region foe Ashley Ridge Friday. Cane Bay hosts Stratford Friday.
