Roger Lee/Journal Scene Junior Matty Powell had a triple against Bishop England Friday.

The Green Wave baseball team shutout an opponent on Thursday and got offensive with an opponent on Friday.

Sophomore pitchers Sawyer Bridges (2-0) and Bo Gobin combined to toss a no-hitter at Cane Bay Thursday. Bridges threw six innings, striking out eight batters, walking two and hitting another. Gobin then came in for the final inning and stuck out three batters to preserve the 5-0 Summerville victory.

Johnston McCurry was 2 for 2 at the plate with a double and 2 RBIs. Charlie Fessler also had 2 RBIs and TJ Hopkins stole two bases.

“The pitching was good but we didn’t really play that well,” Summerville coach Alan Bridges said. “Of course we hadn’t been on the field in several days because of the weather so I guess that is to be expected.”

Summerville earned a 13-2 win over Bishop England during its home opener Friday.

Zach Mosay (2-0) picked up the win on the hill, pitching four innings and allowing only one hit and no runs while striking out seven batters. Fessler pitched the final inning of the game, which was called in the fifth due to the 10-run mercy rule.

The game was scoreless through nearly three innings, but Hopkins got things going for the Green Wave with two outs in the bottom of the third with a drag bunt.

McCurry then singled him in for the first of 8 runs scored in the inning.

Summerville added five runs in the fourth, which featured a triple by Matty Powell.

“It looked to me like the ball hit off the light pole so it should have been a homerun, but they gave him a triple,” Bridges said. “Pretty much all our guys got a hit except Mosay and reached on a walk. We also played better defensively than we did at Cane Bay. I would like to see us get off to a faster start though.”

Summerville improved to 5-1 with the win. This week, Summerville hosts Colleton County for its Region 8-AAAA opener Wednesday and travels to Beaufort Friday.
