Dorchester County will be interviewing candidates for the newly created Director of Parks and Recreation position as early as next week, officials said.
According to Jay Byars, county councilman and Parks and Recreation Commission chairman, the county received roughly 50 applicants from in and out of state.
Although the county administrator, Jason Ward, will be hiring the director, Byars said interested Parks and Recreation Commission members may have an opportunity to sit in on the interviews. The commission developed the original language of the job position and, once hired, the person will be working directly with the body, which is an advisory commission appointed by County Council.
“We got a lot of interest, some very strong candidates,” Byars said. “The resumes on some of these are just phenomenal.”
He said there were about 12 candidates they classified as “very strong” who will be interviewed.
The interview planning is still preliminary, but he said the process should begin next week.
If a candidate is hired in April, Byars is optimistic the new director will begin work in May.
