DD2 looking to fill up to 20 teaching positions

  • Friday, March 28, 2014

For the 2013-2014 school year Dorchester District Two grew by about 500 students.

Now DD2 is looking ahead at the 2014-2015 school year and expecting another student population increase by more than 600 kids. To accommodate these kids, DD2 held a Teacher Recruitment Day on March 15 – something the district has not hosted in several years.

At the March 24 board meeting, Superintendent Joseph Pye congratulated the personnel department for organizing Teacher Recruitment Day, saying because of the event the district now has a “pool of applicants” to choose from to fill available positions. Many applicants participated in on-site interviews.

Pye said the school district is looking to fill up to 20 teaching positions to accommodate teachers who are planning to move on from the district.

“Everybody was full-time interviewing and having a great time doing it,” Pye said. “Some schools with only two openings had 20 people visiting, so there was a lot of interest. We are hoping to get a lot of referrals for those positions too.”

Despite a tight budget being anticipated for the 2013-2014 school year DD2 wants to fill those positions to accommodate the larger incoming class.

Part of the projected budget includes $1.3 million in expenditures for 20 additional teachers. If DD2 finds itself with more funds board members would like 10 additional teaching positions for growth – among more resource officers, assistant principals and guidance counselors at some schools.

DD2 Public Information Officer Pat Raynor said there is a need to fill those positions because they will be available after teachers move on from their careers at the end of the school year. However, Raynor said it is hard to determine whether the district is having trouble retaining teachers. “The Teacher Recruitment Day was really meant to reach out and give teachers the opportunity to apply,” she said. “It really does not play into retention, I don’t think.”

DD2’s personnel department will release an official overview on how Teacher Recruitment Day went at a later date.
