Dr. Douglas Holtzman, or "Dr. Doug" as his young patients call him, is Trident Health's director of pediatric emergency services, and can often be found at Summerville Medical Center's new Pediatric Emergency Department.
From the moment he walks into an examining room, he starts assessing his patient, while doing everything he can to make the child feel comfortable. "It's all about distraction and redirection," he says with a laugh. "Stickers and Popsicles can save the world." Some kids he sees in the Emergency Department only need a bandage. Others are critically ill. Because of his specialized training and experience in pediatric emergency medicine, he is ready for anything, and he has words of assurance for parents. "Ultimately, kids are amazing healers. I've seen children walk away from what would otherwise be devastating injuries or illnesses for adults."
