Sorority celebrates anniversary, gives awards

Provided Sorors of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s local chapter celebrated the sorority Founder’s Day on March 22.

Sigma Upsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated the 106th Founders’ Day Observance of the sorority at the historic Bethel AME Church in Summerville on March 22.

The speaker for the occasion was Sigma Upsilon Omega’s own Barbara Parrott, the director of the Williamsburg County Department of Social Services in Kingstree.

The members of Sigma Upsilon Omega presented Community Service Awards to three deserving individuals, Jeanette Gantt, the Rev. Stephen L. Love and Dexcter Mack.

To recognize and applaud outstanding service and dedication to the organization, Peggy Washington was named the 2014 “Soror of the Year.” Washington is the director of Guidance at Stratford High School in Goose Creek.
