Green Wave wrestling coach Darryl Tucker is receiving some high praise after leading Summerville to the Class AAAA state championship match.
The members of the South Carolina House of Representatives recently passed a resolution recognizing and honoring Tucker for his outstanding season and congratulating him for being named the South Carolina Class AAAA Coach of the Year by the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association.
Tucker is now a finalist for the South Carolina Wrestling Coach of the Year Award to be presented in July.
At the SHS baseball game on Wednesday, Summerville High School Principal Kenny Farrell presented Tucker and the five wrestlers he coached to individual state titles this season with a commemorative plaque to thank them for representing the school and to officially recognize their accomplishments. Wrestlers who were honored were Daniel Smith, Anthony Collins, John Van Slooten, Chad Wood and James Sass.
Then Tucker threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Summerville/Ashley Ridge game.
Tucker is a former wrestler for the Summerville Green Wave who also excelled as a football and baseball player. He is a member of the Summerville Athletic Hall of Fame.
Tucker has been a coach for the school’s wrestling program for 14 years, the past six years as the team’s head coach. In 2005, he earned USA Wrestling Magazine’s Assistant Coach of the Year Award.
