Vote Dempsey for council

  • Wednesday, April 9, 2014

To the Editor:

Lester Dempsey is a candidate for the Dorchester County Council District 7 seat occupied by the incumbent Jay Byars.

Lester is a conservative who can be counted on to promote fiscal responsibility, limited government and traditional values as a member of County Council.

During over a decade of public service Lester earned a well deserved reputation for integrity, service above self, problem solving and excellence while serving in leadership positions on the Berkeley Charleston Dorchester Council of Governments (COG); the Dorchester County Rural Transportation Committee; the Old Fort Fire Department Commission, including as its Chairman; the Charleston Highway and Transportation (CHATs) Policy Committee; the Dorchester County Transportation Commission, including as its Chairman; and the Dorchester Corridor Coalition of Neighborhoods. Lester was awarded “The Order of the Silver Crescent” by Governor Nikki Haley for his having made substantial contributions to his community, specifically regarding transportation issues.

Serving in these capacities has given Lester a wealth of experience and information that would serve him well on County Council.

Claims by the incumbent, Jay Byars, that Mr. Byars initiated the Eagle Creek Trail and Hwy 165 Road Projects are false. In reality, those projects were initiated, with the help of Lester, long before Mr. Byars joined County Council in 2010. Mr. Byars’ claims that he opposes tax increases also deserve pinocchios for being false, given his record of voting and campaigning for the Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) and voting to subsidize the growth and operation of the County’s new Fire Department in the upper part of Dorchester County with tax dollars from the lower end of Dorchester County. Mr. Byars also is supporting a new County Parks Department which will require a tax increase to fund.

Dorchester County District 7 deserves an honest and responsible County Councilman not beholding to special Interest groups. Lester Dempsey is that person!
