Behind a strong pitching performance and timely hits, the Ashley Ridge softball team defeated cross-town rival Fort Dorchester 5-1 Wednesday.

“We started off a little slow but picked it up throughout the game and finished strong,” Ashley Ridge coach Chelsie Lisenby said. “That is one of our big things this year is finishing each game strong and they did a great job tonight. Cam Alverson pitched a really great game for us.”

Alverson struck out nine batters and the Lady Swamp Foxes played error-free defense to improve to 6-4 on the season with a 3-4 mark in Region 8-AAAA.

Outfielder Taylor DeLeon went 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI triple to lead all batters. Catcher Annika Ponton was 2 for 3 at the plate with an RBI and shortstop Val Frank drove in two runs with a double and scored two runs.

Second baseman Bricelin Balcer led the Patriot batters, going 2 for 2 at the plate.

In the bottom of the third inning Frank reached on a fielder’s choice, moved over on a groundout and scored off a single by Noel Gilley.

After not allowing a base runner in the top of the fourth, the Swamp Foxes mounted a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to score four runs. Ponton kicked things off with a single. Kelly Cousins and Katie Chambers then reached on errors to push Ponton across the plate for the game-winning run.

Frank followed with her 2-RBI double and DeLeon’s triple plated Frank for a 5-0 Ashley Ridge lead.

Anastasia Baber opened the fifth with a single, moved around on a groundout and a single by Balcer and then sco4ed on a single by Kayla Holladay. But Alverson fanned the next batter to limit the damage to a run.

The Swamp Fox pitcher struck out four batters during the final two innings. The only two other Patriot batters in the sixth and seventh were sent to the dugout on a line-drive catch and a groundout.

Ashley Ridge hosts Beaufort Friday while Fort Dorchester plays next in the Azalea Invitational Tournament that starts Monday at Gahagan Park.
