Once the Lady Swamp Foxes got going, Summerville didn’t have an answer.
The Ashley Ridge girls’ soccer team rode a late surge to a 6-3 win over cross-town rival Summerville Wednesday. The Lady Swamp Foxes improved to 4-4-0 on the season with a 2-2 mark in Region 8-AAAA while the Lady Green Wave dropped to 3-7-1 and 1-3.
“We played well,” Ashley Ridge assistant coach Toni Schneider said. “There are things we can continue to improve on but overall we were aggressive and took chances. We created opportunities and received a lot of corner kicks.”
Taylor Johnson scored once by heading a corner kick into the goal and again by crushing a ball into the net. However, Summerville bounced back and tied the game. Just before the half, Jade Erickson received a well-placed pass and sent the ball into the net for a 3-2 Lady Swamp Fox advantage entering the final 40 minutes.
In the second half, Ashley Ridge received goals from Lexi Sanchez, Sara Goodwin and Cassidy Govan while holding Summerville scoreless until the final 2 minutes.
The win came at a good time for Ashley Ridge, which put itself in a bit of a hole by losing region games to Bluffton and Beaufort.
On Friday, Summerville hosts Fort Dorchester (6-4, 3-1). With a 3-0 win over Bluffton Wednesday, the Lady Patriots moved into a tie with Beaufort for first place in the region.
Ashley Ridge played Colleton County Thursday after press time and will not return to the field until after spring break.
