The 4-year-olds at Foster Academy in North Charleston didn’t really know who state Rep. Jenny Horne and Rep. Sam Rivers were — but they certainly knew who Pete the Cat was.
Four-year-olds around the state have been a part of a public-private enterprise exposing children to reading before they get to kindergarten through the state’s First Steps 4K program. Horne and Rivers, both Republicans, have supported the effort. Horne represents Summerville and Rivers represents Goose Creek.
Horne and Rivers read Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes as part of a progress update on the program April 11. The children received copies of the book after.
“We’re moving in the right direction,” Horne told the Journal Scene. “The K4 program is critical to helping children be ready to get to kindergarten so they’re not behind in their reading and language skills. It’s certainly a great program. Children are coming into school ready to learn.”
The program was reauthorized by state lawmakers this year.
