The Green Wave baseball team made a late push against Bluffton Friday to keep its hopes of defending the Region 8-AAAA championship alive.

Summerville broke open a tight game in the bottom of the fifth inning to earn an 11-1 victory over Bluffton in six innings. The Wave improved to 11-3 on the season and is one of only two teams in its region with a sole region loss. Ashley Ridge’s only loss in region play came to Summerville.

A Green Wave loss to Beaufort earlier last week wasn’t anticipated and Summerville coach Alan Bridges says his team needs to perform better in order to make some noise in the playoffs.

“We are struggling right now,” Bridges said. “We need to get our swagger back. There are peaks and vallies in baseball and right now we are in a little valley. This win wasn’t pretty. If we didn’t get those walks, it would have been much closer.”

Sawyer Bridges had the win on the hill, throwing five innings and striking out seven batters while surrendering one run. Johnston McCurry closed the game out and yielded one hit and one base on balls while striking out one batter and not giving up any runs.

“I thought Sawyer pitched well tonight,” Coach Bridges said. “They hit the ball some but he threw strikes and his pitch count was down. Charlie Fessler hit the ball well and Billy Peatross had some good turns at bat.

“Otherwise our approach at the plate hasn’t been very good lately.”

Fessler was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Summerville took a 2-1 lead in the third. Catcher Jack Bahen walked and courtesy runner Chad Mathis moved to third on a pair of sacrifice bunts before scoring on a wild pitch.

The Wave then scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases on walks. Fessler had an RBI single but the other four runs were due to a base on balls or a hit batter.

The Wave opened the bottom of the sixth with singles by TJ Hopkins, Steven Dibble and Bo Gobin to drive in a run and then scored two runs off a fielders choice and walks.

This week, Summerville is playing in the Hanahan Invitational Tournament. On April 22, the Wave and the Swamp Foxes play at Ashley Ridge in a game that will likely determine the region championship.
