The Green Wave baseball team had the best performance for the Summerville-area teams during this year’s Hanahan Invitational Tournament.
Summerville opened the tournament Monday with an 8-7 win over Chantilly High out of Virginia. Zach Mosay got the win on the hill for the Wave. Sawyer Bridges hit a 3-run homerun and Johnston McCurry had a 2-run homer.
On Tuesday, the Wave defeated host team Hanahan 13-0 to advance to the tournament quarterfinals. McCurry and Charlie Fessler both had three hits each. Bridges had the pitching win.
The Wave defeated Stratford 14-4 Wednesday to advance to the semi-finals, which were held after press time Thursday. Fessler had a grand slam in the seventh inning and Billy Peatross also homered in the seventh. Earlier in the game, Matty Powell had a 3-run homer.
Fessler pitched for five innings, but John Eckley closed the game out and earned the win.
Summerville improved to 14-3 with the wins and carries a 9-1 region record into a game at Ashley Ridge Monday.
Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester and Cane Bay all went 1-2 during the HIT. Pinewood Prep lost its first game of the tournament, but no other results were available from the Panthers’ other tournament games at press time.
Ashley Ridge defeated Hickory Grove High School out of North Carolina 8-6 on Monday, but lost to Virginia teams James River and Grassfield. Fort Dorchester defeated Academic Magnet 5-4 on Monday and then lost to Oakton out of Virginia and Hartsville. Cane Bay defeated Beaufort 4-2 on Monday, but lost to Virginia teams Madison and Hickory.
