Pinewood boys claim runner-up honors

The Pinewood boys placed second and the Pinewood girls placed fifth out of a nine-team field competing at the Porter-Gaud track meet April 12.

Pinewood posted several first -place finishes.


Austin McCray won the triple jump with a school-record mark of 40 feet, 2 inches in only his second time competing in the event. Mason Hazel won the 3,200-meter run with ease in a time of 10 minutes, zero seconds. Joseph Siegel won the 800.

The Panther 4 x 800 team of Seigel, Ray Mennetti, Zhang Tian Yi, and Hazel placed first and the Pinewood 4 x 400 team of Steven Kennedy, Austin McCray, Landry Lima and Dexter Coaxum placed first.

Landry Lima placed second in the 400 with a qualifying time of 55.24. Dexter Coaxum placed fourth in the 100, 200 and long jump with state qualifying marks.

Zhang Tian Yi placed fourth in the 800. Jake Birdsong placed sixth in the 800 and ran the 1,600.

Ray Mennetti placed sixth in the 1,600 with a state qualifying time of 5:16.9. Austin McCray placed seventh in the 200 with a state-qualifying time. Matthew Davis finished ninth in the 1,600.


Maryah Nasir won the 1,600 and 800, lowering her 800 school record time to 2:22.78.

Katie Smoak placed second in the discus and third in the shot. Isabelle Greenstreet placed fourth in the 3,200.

The Pinewood girls’ 4 x 100 relay of Katie Smoak, Katie Stagliano, Victoria Kennedy and Hayes Devlin placed fourth and the Pinewood girls’ 4 x 400 relay of Emily Shuler, Katrina Powers, Taylor Strickland and Isabelle Greenstreet placed third.

Grace Johnson competed in the triple jump just missing qualifying with a jump of 27-11.

Members of the Pinewood teams also competed in the Taco Bell Track and Field Invitational held that same weekend.

“This is clearly the most competitive meet in South Carolina, attracting top athletes from within our state and surrounding states,” Pinewood coach Kelly Hazel said.

Nasir placed seventh in the mile race to earn a spot on the podium with a time of 5:13.
