Lightning caused outages, SCE&G says

  • Wednesday, April 30, 2014

Lightning associated with the severe thunderstorms has caused most of the power outages Wednesday, SCE&G told the Journal Scene.

In a Twitter conversation with @SCEGnews, the company reported that “lightninig in the area played a significant role” but crews have gotten the number of outages down.

As of 1:38 p.m. Wednesday, the SCE&G outage website reported 164 power outages in Dorchester County.

At 11:24 a.m. there were more than 3,000 homes without power in the area.

Total, the county has 54,940 households registered with SCE&G.

While earlier in the day Dorchester County had the highest number of outages in the Lowcountry, the number has been significantly reduced. When Dorchester had more than 3,000 outages, Berkeley and Charleston counties were reporting 46 and 155 outages, respectiely.

The National Weather Service has listed an advisory for minor flooding within Dorchester and Charleston counties.

NWS has also said the severe thunderstorms may lead to “damaging winds...large hail...and possibly tornadoes.”

This story will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
