Lady Green Wave to host district championship series

  • Sunday, May 4, 2014

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Summer Jenkins earned two wins in the circle last week to help the Lady Green Wave softball team advance to the District VI championship series of the Class AAAA playoffs.

Two local baseball teams and a softball team are still alive in the state playoffs.

The Lady Green Wave softball team earned an 8-0 win at South Florence Saturday to earn home-field advantage in the District VI championship series of the Class AAAA playoffs. On Wednesday, Summerville will host the winner of Monday’s South Florence/Spring Valley game. The Wave only needs one win to advance while the winner of Monday’s game has to beat Summerville twice Wednesday in order to advance.

Summer Jenkins went the distance in the circle for Summerville and picked up her second pitching win of the playoffs. She only allowed four hits.

Taylor Powell had a solo homerun for Summerville, which also received key hits from Jenkins and Dani Halajcsik.

Summerville improved its record to 23-4 while South Florence dropped to 22-5.

The Green Wave baseball team’s road trip didn’t go as well as Summerville (18-5) fell 11-1 Saturday to Sumter, the state’s top ranked team.

The Green Wave, which defeated Lugoff-Elgin 2-0 Thursday in its District VI playoff opener, will host Aiken Monday in an elimination game. After losing to Sumter, Aiken handed Lugoff-Elgin a 19-2 loss Saturday.

The Ashley Ridge baseball team bounced back from a 1-0 loss to Wando Thursday with an 11-3 win over Carolina Forest Saturday. The Swamp Foxes will host Dutch Fork Monday in a District VIII elimination game.

The winner will travel to Wando Wednesday and will have to defeat the Warriors twice in order to claim the district championship and advance.

Freshman Josh Church picked up the pitching win for Ashley Ridge Saturday. He threw six innings and surrendered six hits while walking four and striking out two. Yates Robinson closed the game and retired three straight batters, including one with a strikeout.

The Swamp Foxes tallied 11 hits in the game. Hunter Grover was 3 for 4 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored. Jason Miller was 3 for 4 with an RBI and three runs scored.
