The Pinewood Prep Track and Field team had four event state champions at the SCISA Class AAA Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

“Overall our boys placed fourth at state and the girls placed seventh,” Pinewood coach Kelly Hazel said. “I was very happy for our four event state champions as this was a great way to finish our season. All the coaches are proud of how well the season went.”

Eighth-grader Maryah Nasir won the 1,600-meter race, matching her personal record time of 5:09.94, which is a new SCISA state record. Nasir also won the 3,200 with an 11:12.44 time that broke the state record. However, Logan Morris (Class AA) ran 11:08 to break Nasir’s record. Nasir’s time does still stand as a school record.

Junior Austin McCray won the Triple Jump with a 43-0 mark to set a new school record.

The Pinewood boys’ 4 x 800 relay team of Joseph Siegel, Ray Mennetti, Zhang Tian Yi and Mason Hazel won with a new school record time of 8:46 that is just off the state record.

Senior Mason Hazel placed second in the Boys 1,600 with a time of 4:28, which broke the state meet record of 4:31. However, Brent Demarest of Porter-Gaud won with a 4:21 establishing the new record. Hazel placed second in the 800 with a time of 2:01.4 that broke the state record of 2:02 but again the record was set by the event winner.

Senior Katie Smoak finished a close second in the discus with a throw of 98-02, missing first by one inch.

The Pinewood boys’ 4x 400 relay team of Nick Galliard, Dexter Coaxum, Joseph Siegel and Austin McCray finished a closed second to Porter-Gaud. Pinewood was right with the Cyclones until the last exchange when Pinewood’s anchor runner was involved in a collision with a Porter-gaud runner and lost his balance.

The Panther relay team finished with a 3:35 time to set a new school record. All team members posted their season-best splits.
