Green Wave, Swamp Fox baseball teams eliminated

  • Thursday, May 8, 2014

The top-ranked team in the state was again too much for the Green Wave baseball team.

Summerville fell 2-1 to Sumter Wednesday in the District VI finals of the Class AAAA playoffs. It was the second playoff loss for the Green Wave so Summerville (19-6) was eliminated.

Sumter scored two runs in the third inning and kept the Green Wave bats silent most of the night. The Wave finally managed to push a runner across the plate in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t get the run it needed to tie.

The Green Wave opened the playoffs with a 2-0 victory over Lugoff-Elgin. Summerville then fell 11-1 Saturday to Sumter before returning home to earn a 7-6 victory over Aiken to advance to the district championship series.

The Ashley Ridge baseball team was eliminated with a 9-2 loss to Wando in the District VIII championship series. Rusty Grayson and Nick Rowell both had an RBI single in the sixth inning, but the Swamp Fox rally ended there.

Ashley Ridge (20-6) opened the playoffs with a 2-1 loss to Wando, but bounced back with two straight wins to advance to the district finals. The Swamp Foxes earned an 11-3 victory over Carolina Forest Saturday and then defeated Dutch Fork 4-1.

Ashley Ridge was the Region 8-AAAA champion this season while Summerville was the region runner-up. Beaufort and Colleton County were the other two Region 8-AAAA teams to make the playoffs.
