Teacher Appreciation Week is a time students show their gratitude for their teachers, but at Summerville Elementary School instructors got more than just a “thank you” to start off their week.
Appreciation Week started May 5 and at Summerville Elementary the celebration kicked off with a visit from the Kickin’ Chicken corporate group.
To give back to teachers Kickin’ Chicken provided lunch for faculty and staff at the school, prepared fresh for employees to come pick up in the parking lot.
Meg Watson, corporate director of marketing for Kickin’ Chicken, said the restaurant chain picked different schools in the Charleston area to provide lunch for Teacher Appreciation Week.
Each school selected is one that happens to be near a Kickin’ Chicken location. Summerville Elementary was selected for Dorchester District Two because, Watson said, the corporation is already familiar with the school, having participated in coupon give-aways at events such as the school’s end-of-the-year awards celebration.
However, this is the first time Summerville Elementary has gotten such a visit for Teacher Appreciation Week. “We’re hoping to grow it next year,” she said. “We’re just getting our feet wet and seeing how it works for the school.”
The Kickin’ Chicken truck – known as the Chicken Coupe –served lunch May 5 from 10 a.m. to noon. Teachers had pre-filled menu cards for their orders, which were made fresh inside the truck and then handed off to teachers as they arrived.
Many teachers and faculty wrote little notes such as, “Thank you so much for doing this” on their menu cards.
Employees got to pick from delicacies including wraps, nuggets, salads and a choice side of potato salad, chips or French fries.
Watson said the Kickin’ Chicken corporation was happy to provide lunch in recognition of Teacher Appreciation Week.
“It’s just reaching out to the community that supports us,” she said.
Keiko Hamilton, a special education assistant at Summerville Elementary, was excited about the lunch.
“It’s very nice,” she said. “It’s a great showing. We love Kickin’ Chicken.”
