Former Green Wave standout Matt White is making the most out of his final season with the Spartanburg Methodist College baseball team.
White, who has signed to play for Charleston Southern University next year, helped the Pioneers capture a No. 4 national ranking among junior colleges and the No. 1 seed for the 2014 Region X Tournament that began this week. White carried a 13-game hitting streak into the tournament.
The second baseman carried a .420 batting average into the tournament, which puts him among the Top 30 in that category for JuCo players nation wide. During the regular season he had 70 hits, including seven doubles, four triples and a homerun. He also stole 20 bases.
His performance has earned him a pair of prestigious honors.
White is one of only two dozen players selected for a JuCo national team that will participate in the National Baseball Congress World Series to be held this summer in Wichita, Kan.
The event serves as a showcase for some of the best amateur baseball players and teams in North America. This summer marks the 80th edition of the tournament but the first time in 15 years that a national team will participate.
White is also one of eight SMC players recently named to the 2014 All Region X Team for their performances during the season.
SMC is looking to capture its third straight Region X Tournament title and host the Eastern District Championship May 16-17.
