A three-sport athlete for the Green Wave will take his talents to the Newberry College Wrestling team next school year.
Summerville High School senior Chad Wood has signed to wrestle for the Newberry Wolves. Wood, who took down his share of running backs as a Green Wave linebacker and traded in his tights at the end of the wrestling season for a Green Wave baseball uniform, says he is excited to be joining a program as strong as Newberry’s.
“They have only been around since ‘05 but they already have a strong tradition,” Wood said. “They are just very good. I feel like it’s such an honor for them to give me a scholarship. Their coach is from South Carolina and he has done a great job with the program. They have placed at the top for the nation a few times and they ended up placing second at the team duals nationals this year.”
The Wolves are getting a wrestler who received All-state and All-Lowcounrty honors three straight years. Wood is a three-time lower-state champion, three-time region champion and three-year captain for the Green Wave wrestling team.
Wood claimed the 4-A individual state championship in the 160-pound weight class his senior season, when he also helped the Green Wave team finish as the state runner-up. Summerville suffered a heartbreaking 28-23 loss to Rock Hill in the 2014 Dual State Championship match.
As a senior he also helped the 4A/1A South team bring home top honors from the 2014 North/South Wrestling All-star Weekend.
Wood placed second in his class at the 2013 individual state championships and placed fourth in his class in 2012.
He plans to major in education and pursue a career as a coach.
