Fort Dorchester senior Melissa Foster has signed with the Erskine College Women’s Soccer Team.

Foster announced her decision during a signing celebration held at FDHS, where she was joined by teammates, family members, friends and coaches.

“I didn’t know much about the college until they contacted me,” Foster said. “It’s a small school which isn’t originally what I was looking for but when I went to visit everyone was really welcoming. It’s so family like and I felt really at home there so I knew it was a good choice for me.”

Fort Dorchester coach Taryn Floyd says the Flying Fleet is getting a tremendous athlete.

“From the moment I took over Mel has been an intricate part of the team,” Floyd said. “She has been like my right-hand man. Whenever I needed anything done on or off the field she was the one to take care of it. She is a leader in every aspect. She very dynamic and so solid on the field. She is also very mature so she will mix well with the Erskine team.”

Foster is a four-year letterman for the Lady Patriots who spent most of her time at the center-back position. She is a four-time all-region player and three-year team captain. She also plays for South Carolina United Mt. Pleasant and helped her travel team win the South Carolina championship last season to qualify for regionals.

She says she isn’t sure where she will fit in with the Erskine team, but is looking forward to finding out.

“I’ve heard they like to switch people up a lot but I’m willing to play wherever they need me,” Foster said. “I have some experience playing in other positions. I like the coaches there and I’m looking forward to playing for them.”

Foster is an honor student ranked in the Top 10 for her graduating class. She plans to major in biology and purse a medical degree.

“They have a really good science program there which also factored into my decision,” she said.
