For the second time in three seasons, Summerville softball ended Wando’s season in the semifinal round of the Class AAAA Lower State playoffs.
The Green Wave pulled out a 5-4 win over the Warriors in eight innings Wednesday to earn the opportunity to defend their Lower State title Friday at Bluffton. Summerville (26-5) has to beat Bluffton twice to win the Lower State and advance to the state title series.
Two outs into the top of the eighth inning, Anna Gluhosky squeezed a ground ball through the gap at shortstop to score Brittany Olean for the go-ahead Green Wave run.
“This was a big win for us,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “We had some big-time kids step up with some clutch offensive hits when we had to have them.”
Summerville starter Summer Jenkins needed just six pitches in the bottom of the inning to force three quick groundouts. Jenkins struck out 12 in the win, giving up three earned runs on eight hits.
Alyssa Heinrich suffered the loss for Wando (19-11), giving up three earned runs off eight hits and three walks with two strikeouts in eight innings pitched.
“We just made too many mistakes,” Wando coach Steve Legette said. “Small things make the big things happen. Fielding, hitting, we didn’t make adjustments, we didn’t run the bases well. You can’t make that many mistakes at this level against a team like that.”
Summerville defeated Bluffton, 4-2, in the Lower State title game last season. The Green Wave also owns a 2-1 advantage in the season series this year.
“Things ended up working out for us so maybe things happened for a reason, we’ll see,” Tucker said. “Bluffton is a good ball team and I’m sure it’s going to be a heck of a battle.”
