Roger Lee/Journal Scene Doug Hetzel came in with a round of 75 during last week’s 4A Lower State Golf Tournament to help the Swamp Foxes advance to the state championship tournament.

One team plus an individual golfer from the Summerville area advanced to play in the Class AAAA State Golf Tournament this week.

Ashley Ridge came in with a team score of 320 to tie for fifth place at the 4A Lower State Golf Tournament held at Woodside Plantation in Aiken May 14. The top eight teams from last week’s tournament qualified for the 4A State Championship at Furman Golf Club, which wrapped up Tuesday after press time.

The Swamp Foxes were the only Region 8-AAAA team to qualify as Fort Dorchester and Bluffton both shot 326 to tie for ninth place and just miss advancing. Lexington won the Lower State event with a team total of 305 and Wando was runner-up with a 309. North Augusta (315), South Aiken (319), Sumter (320), West Florence (322) and South Florence (324) also advanced.

Doug Hetzel, who made five birdies en route to shooting a 75, led Ashley Ridge. Austin Zoller played steady golf to shoot a 77 and post another solid score. Zak Butt, Ben Crimminger and Jacob Daley also helped the Swamp Foxes advance.

“We have prepared all year for the state tournament and the course sets up well for us,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “Zak Butt is the defending State Champion from last year and Austin Zoller had a strong showing last year as well to finish in the top ten as an individual. Ben Crimminger and Doug Hetzel are seniors and they have the length and experience to play well at Furman. Ben carried us at Region and Doug carried us at Lower State and they have proved that it takes an entire team to do well at this level. I’m looking forward to seeing this team put forth its best performance next week.”

Fort Dorchester’s RJ Keur and South Aiken’s Jake Carter both shot 71 at the Lower State Tournament to tie for low medalist honors. Both advanced as an individual to play in State Tournament.

Summerville’s Andrew Purcell, who was competing as an individual, shot a 76 to finish in the Top 15 but missed out of the final individual qualifying spot by two strokes. Fort Dorchester’s Dane Henderson also played well but came in at 79.

The other two individuals who qualified for the state tournament are Bluffton’s Alec Weary (73) and Aiken’s Spencer Skiff (74).
