On Thursday, June 5, the nationally syndicated newspaper columnist will be in North Charleston to talk about “Lessons of Forgiveness in a War Zone.” The event is sponsored by Trident Health and will take place at Charleston Southern University in the Whitfield Center for Christian Leadership. Chaplain Burkes is a freelance writer and spiritual columnist. His column takes a spiritual, often comical - if not irreverent - look at everyday life. He first started writing the column for Florida Today on October 5, 2001 and began syndication with Gannett News Service on April 10, 2002. His column now runs in numerous papers around the country.
Chaplain Burkes is a chaplain in the California Air National Guard and active member of Impact Community Church. He is endorsed by the Southern Baptist General Convention and is certified by the Association of Professional Chaplains.
He graduated from Baylor University, Waco, TX, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in religion and journalism. He has a Master of Divinity degree from Golden Gate Seminary in Mill Valley, CA. He is a husband and father of four.
