A motion to prohibit the use or possession of electronic cigarettes continues to move through the school district.
Board members raised the issue in March, saying they wanted to ensure policies dealing with tobacco include the prohibition of “e-cigarettes” on school property.
This came about after instances within the district of students smoking the e-cigarettes on school property.
At the May 12 board meeting, Linda Huffman, assistant superintendent of administration and personnel, went over a list of proposed changes to existing policies, one of which would be made within the district’s code of conduct policy. The proposed change includes the “use or possession of tobacco to include e-cigarettes.”
Further policies include similar wording, including e-cigarettes being added to the list of tobacco paraphernalia students are not allowed to use or possess at school.
Although e-cigarettes are becoming more popular with adults and teenagers, DD2 officials previously stated they do not want to see students smoking anything on school property – nor would they want other students to see it and pick up the habit.
DD2’s policy states “the board believes that tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke (environmental tobacco smoke) are hazardous to the health of human beings, especially children. Therefore, the board affirms that one of the best methods of instruction is one that is provided within a 100 percent tobacco-free environment.”
The updated e-cigarette policy update is not official yet, but Huffman said once it is, school officials will have an easier time monitoring it. “We don’t want there to be smoking anywhere,” she previously told The Journal Scene.
