Registration opens for Junior Tennis Camp

  • Friday, May 30, 2014

Provided Summer Junior Tennis Camp at Doty Park offers tennis instruction and activities for youth age 5 and older.

The Doty Park tennis courts recently received a facelift and will be a hub for youth tennis this summer.

The Town of Summerville Parks and Recreation Department was awarded a US Tennis Association grant that it used to add junior lines to the six tennis courts at Doty Park.

“Now that the courts have junior lines we can host USTA-sanctioned junior tournaments,” Parks and Recreation Manager Doyle Best said. “It was a matching grant so basically we were reimbursed for 75 percent of the costs.”

Sanctioned tournaments are advertised on the USTA website so they typically attract players from out of town. At the same time, they can save a trip for local players.

“A lot of these tournaments last three days so by hosting tournaments we can save local families from having to devote their entire weekend to tennis,” Town of Summerville Tennis Director Nancy Sumersett said.

Doty Park already has two USTA tournaments scheduled this summer. The first is an adult tournament to be held July 12.

The second is a Level 5 youth tournament for players age 10 and younger to be held July 26. The youth tournament is a one-day event.

The Town is also preparing for its annual Summer Junior Tennis Camp at Doty Park. Registration is now open for sessions scheduled for June 16, June 23, July 7, July 14, July 21 and Aug. 4.

Junior Tennis Camp for those age 5 and older will run from 8-11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday.

Registration is $115 and includes a camp T-shirt. A discount is available for those registering for more than one session.

Activities will be available for beginner, intermediate and advanced players.

The focus for beginners will be on having fun and learning how to play.

Advanced players will focus more on execution, consistency and placement of their Point-Play skills.

Snacks and water will be provided. A $50 deposit is required.
