Summerville High School graduate and Bulldog wrestler Aaron Hansen has received All-Academic honors.

Hansen and fellow The Citadel wrestlers Jack Duane, Joaquin Marquez, Marshall Haas and Matt Frisch, were named to the National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Individual All-Academic team. Frisch is receiving the honor for the second straight season.

In addition, The Citadel wrestling team has been honored by the association as one of the nation’s Top 30 Division I All-Academic Teams for the 2013-14 wrestling season.

Only Oklahoma (six) had more individual members on the all-academic team than The Citadel’s five. The Bulldogs finished the season with a team GPA of 3.058 to land in 27th place on the exclusive list, marking the second straight year that the team has earned the top 30 ranking.

“This is a great honor for our team and the five individuals that earned Academic All-American status,” Bulldog coach Rob Hjerling said. “Honors like this support our mission to excel on the mat and in the classroom.”

To qualify for the Individual All-Academic team, a wrestler must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA and be an NCAA qualifier or win 60 percent of his total schedule. Wrestlers also qualify with a 3.0 GPA and NCAA all-America honors (top eight at the NCAA championship).

For ranking purposes, the team GPA is comprised of 12 student-athletes, including the 10 wrestlers that were entries in the NCAA tournament conference qualifier. If teams had less than 10 entries for their respective qualifier, they were allowed to fill those spots with wrestlers who competed in at least one varsity dual during the season. Gardner-Webb and Appalachian State also represented the Southern Conference in the team GPA rankings, while Harvard repeated as the top academic wrestling program for the second-straight year.
