File Summerville’s Taylor Powell has been named a North-South All-star.

The leadoff hitter for the Lady Green Wave softball team will participate in the 2014 South Carolina Coaches Association For Women’s Sports North-South All-star event.

Summerville High School outfielder Taylor Powell has been named to the 4A/1A South All-star team. She is one of only 16 players selected for the team, which will compete against the 4A/1A North, 2A/3A North and 2A/3A South all-star teams during the event this summer.

The series of all-star games is designed to pit the best seniors in the state up against each other in a showcase format and to award players for their contributions to their high school teams throughout their career.

“Taylor Powell was a great leader for us in the outfield and at the plate,” Summerville coach Heather Tucker said. “She is a kid that would sacrifice her body to make a play for the team. Offensively she truly became a triple threat from the left side of the plate this season being able to bunt, slap and hit away. She was our leadoff hitter this season and did a great job in that spot. From her ninth-grade year to her senior year she has been the most improved player that has come through our program. We will certainly miss her.”

Powell, who has signed to play for Charleston Southern University, finished her senior season with a .530 batting average and .575 slugging percentage. She had 53 hits including seven doubles, two homeruns and a triple. She scored 37 runs and drove in 16 runs.

Powell is also the 2014 SHS valedictorian.

Cane Bay’s Sharon Allred and Lexington’s Russell Spires will coach the 4A/1A South team in this summer’s event. Other members of the team are Cane Bay’s Traci Howell, Stratford’s Madison Ryan, Wando’s Morganne Howard, Beaufort’s Natalie Moore, Bluffton’s Courtney Smith and Morgan Parker, Dutch Fork’s Hayley Elkins, Lexington’s Emily Mattone, White Knoll’s Ashley Brantley, South Florence’s Sierra Pate, Conway’s Kady Edwards, Branchville’s Caroline Murray, East Clarendon’s Leslie Altman, Latta’s Anna Rogers and Lake View’s Morgan Herlong.
