Leslie Cantu

Veteran journalist Leslie Cantu is the new managing editor at The Summerville Journal Scene.

Cantu was a news reporter at The Journal Scene from 2010 to 2013, and spent the past year as a producer at Live 5 News in Charleston.

“The Journal Scene team is excited to have Leslie Cantu return,” Summerville Communications Publisher Steve Wagenlander said.

“Leslie’s commitment to serving our community is a passion that is shared by our entire news-gathering organization.

“We are fortunate to have a journalist of her quality as a leader in our newsroom.”

“Leslie was our first choice to lead the editorial staff in Summerville, and we are thrilled that she is back,” Summerville Communications Editor Frank Johnson said. “She is an experienced and talented writer and editor, a trusted voice in the community, and a leader in the newsroom.”

Cantu started her journalism career as the local government and Shaw Air Force Base reporter at The Sumter Item.

After three years at The Item she was awarded a Congressional Fellowship through the American Political Science Association and spent nine months working in a Congressional office to observe Congress firsthand.

She then covered Internet policy for Washington Internet Daily before returning to South Carolina and the beauty of the Lowcountry. She resides with her husband Kenny, a teacher, their daughter Lucy, who plans to become either a superhero or a princess, one ornery cat and a wildly enthusiastic puppy.

Cantu can be reached at 873-9424 and lcantu@journalscene.com.
