The Summerville Fire Department is investigating a fire on Cavalier Drive that left two people dead early Wednesday.
Fifty-one-year-old Sharon Hodge and 9-year-old Christian Zey died about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to Dorchester County Coroner Chris Nisbet.
Christian was a student at Summerville Elementary who celebrated his birthday June 1 with a party. His chihuahua escaped unharmed. Dustin Zey, 19, also escaped the fire.
Zey said he was in his room, an addition on the back of the mobile home, when he heard screams of “fire!”
He was able to run next door and scream for help, but no one could re-enter the house as the fire turned into an inferno.
A neighbor across the street said the fire quickly engulfed the home.
“It was just a ball of fire,” the neighbor said.
Battalian Chief Jake Evans said four engines, one ladder truck, the fire chief, one on-duty battalion chief and three off-duty battalion chiefs responded to the blaze.
Investigators were at the home, which is in a mobile home park off Bacons Bridge Road, Wednesday morning.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
