Since September, Morelisa Sabb’s second graders at Joseph R. Pye Elementary have been working on their own books.
The books are bound with colorful construction paper and illustrated with drawings and sketches that the second-graders did on their own.
The project was meant to help them learn and understand the writing process for the second grade curriculum – and now each student can say they have written a book for his or herself.
In celebration of finishing their books students got to participate in what Sabb entitled Authors Day – when students got to read a biographical page from their little books aloud to their classmates.
Kaelee shared with the class reasons why she enjoys coming to school.
“School is fun because there are lots of things to do,” she said. “I like to play at recess. You get to learn new things.”
Authors Day was May 28 for Sabb’s class, when all her students gathered on her colorful classroom rug and listened as, one by one, students would take the podium to read out their biographical piece. Students talked about who they were best friends with at school, what they liked to do with their families, what season of the year is their favorite (summer won, hands down), fun things they do with family pets and more.
Students like Ethan and Conner wrote about why they were best friends with each other.
“Ethan is a great best friend because he plays with me,” Conner shared with the class. “He’s nice to me all the time.”
Ethan reciprocated when it was his turn.
“He (Conner) helps me up when I fall down,” Ethan read to his peers. “That is why he is my best friend.”
Sabb has been hosting Authors Day for eight years as a way to get her students excited about writing – and their finished books are always something the students look forward to.
“I think they did really well with their writing overall,” Sabb said. “They loved it.”
Each page of a child’s book covers different writing instruction: over the school year students learned how to write informative pieces, explanative ones, narratives, descriptive writings and more. Sabb would sometimes allow time for free writes as well.
Moses was one of many students who wrote about why he loved summertime.
“My favorite season is summer,” he said. “It’s nice when it is warm. I like going in the pool. I like eating sweet, juicy watermelon. I like coming into the house so I can cool off.”
Parents were also invited to participate and listen to the students read aloud. Tomova Robinson, whose daughter Fallan is in the class, said she feels Sabb is very good about pushing the students to do well.
“Fallan loves school,” Robinson said. “Sabb is good at making them think outside the box.”
After all the students read aloud they got to visit each others’ desks and sign their autographs on the back of their classmates’ books.
Kaelee told The Journal Scene that she enjoys writing because it helps students learn how to spell out words.
“I do write at home and draw,” she said. “One time I wrote a big story about my family.”
New student Jalen was not able to participate in writing and sharing his own book but he is staying optimistic.
“Maybe I’ll shoot my own movie and then I’ll make a book,” he said.
