A local athlete and a local coach will participate in the 2014 North-South Classic girls’ soccer match.
Ashley Ridge forward Sara Goodwin has been named to the South All-star Team that will take on the North team during the South Carolina High School Soccer Coaches Association North-South Classic girls’ soccer match scheduled for June 28 at Blackbaud Stadium. The event is designed to honor and showcase some of the top graduating soccer players in the state.
Goodwin is one of only seven Lowcountry players selected for the event.
Ashley Ridge coach Mark Weaver has been selected as the assistant coach for the South All-stars.
“It will be an honor to coach such a great group of young women,” Weaver said.
Goodwin scored 54 goals and added 24 assists in her four years with the Ashley Ridge varsity team. Weaver says she also has the intangible traits the all-star coaches looked for in comprising this year’s squad.
“Sara is a coach’s dream player and a teacher’s ideal student,” he said. “She is a leader through her actions on and off the field. In each training session she pushes herself and her team to improve. During each game she was the focused captain for our team. She also strives to do her best academically and graduated with honors this spring. She is a humble, intelligent, mature young woman.”
Other Lowcountry players named to the South squad are Julia Shahid and Regan Van Metre of Bishop England, Casey Murakami and Amy Paparozzi of West Ashley, Greyson Vevon of James Island and Allie Winglosky of Wando.
