The award-winning schools were released by the South Carolina Department of Education on April 9. A press release from the Education Oversight Committee states the results are based on the 2012-2013 school year.

This year, 592 elementary, middle and high schools, as well as career centers and special schools, were recognized, down from 677 in the prior year.

Flags were presented by Superintendent Joe Pye and board Chairwoman Gail Hughes as Public Information Officer Pat Raynor read the list of schools. The Palmetto Gold and Silver awards are based on schools’ test scores and other data.

“I think this tells parents that we serve every child, every day,” Raynor said.
