Pinewood Prep’s High School Quiz Bowl Team traveled to Chicago recently to compete in the 2014 National Academic Quiz Tournament (NAQT).
Nearly 300 teams from across the U. S. competed in this year’s competition, with the Pinewood team of Sean Carter, Logan Dwyer (Team Captain), Sam Lopez and Ryan Mazalatis placing 215 overall.
The NAQT is a competitive, academic, interscholastic activity for which players attend periodic practices and then represent their school at varsity tournaments.
The tournament is open to public, private, religious, charter and magnet schools, as well as home school associations. Teams compete at the local, regional and state levels, with the top ranking teams in each state receiving an invitation to the national tournament.Quiz bowl questions span the entire spectrum of high school curriculum and also include an array of current events, sports and popular culture questions. The matches feature a blend of individual competition and team collaboration, since no individual player is likely to be an expert in all subject areas.
Pinewood’s team held its own through ten rounds of questioning, winning four of six matches for a total of 1,395 points.
The top three teams at the competition were the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy A from Austin, Tex. with 8,795 points; St. John’s School from Houston, Tex. with 7,895 points; and the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy B from Austin, Tex. with 7,435 points.
Pinewood’s High School Quiz Bowl Team sponsors are Stephanie Todaro, Wendy Girgan and Stuart McMullan. For information on the National Academic Quiz Tournament, visit www.naqt.com.
