As the temperatures rise, the action in the Coastal Carolina Aquatic Association is also heating up.
The first week of the association’s swim season has included some very tight meets as well as some upsets. More than 2,700 swimmers age 4 to 18 are competing on 22 Lowcountry teams during the association’s 2014 season.
The Pine Forest Country Club team is out to a blistering start this summer.
On Tuesday the Porpoises earned a 375-158 win at the Summerville YMCA pool in Oakbrook to improve to 3-0 going into Thursday’s meet held after press time. Pine Forest, the only undefeated team in the Blue League, also has wins over Fort Johnson and Country Club of Charleston.
Two other Summerville-area teams entered Thursday’s round of meets with a 2-1 record.
Three-time defending association champion Coosaw Creek carried a 36-meet winning streak for dual meets into this season. However, the streak came to an end June 12 as the Crocodiles’ archrival handed Coosaw a 286-250 loss. That loss to Snee Farm is the first Red League loss the Crocs have suffered since June 23, 2009.
Coosaw did bounce back Tuesday, earning a 316-221 victory over Shadowmoss to improve to 2-1.
The Ashborough Alligators opened the season with wins over ION and the Summerville Y, but dropped to 2-1 Tuesday with a 313-224 loss to Country Club of Charleston.
Legend Oaks defeated ION June 12, but dropped to 1-1 after suffering a heartbreaking 271-265 loss to the Fort Johnson Dolphins Tuesday.
Newington and the Summerville Y both carried an 0-2 record into meets Thursday. It is worth noting that Newington finished only 5 points shy of Crowfield June 12 and the Tiger Sharks’ other loss was to power Snee Farm.
The Summerville Y’s other loss was to Ashborough.
Association meets are typically held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7 p.m.
The association’s championship meet, also known as City Meet, is scheduled for July 18-20.
City Meet is normally held at the Jewish Community Center pool but due to construction this summer the season-ending meet will be held at the Crowfield Golf and Country Club in Goose Creek.
