Martial artists have powerful performance

Summerville-based martial artists did well at the Powerade State Games June 21.

Ray Smith’s Tae Kwon Do of Summerville sent 26 students to the Powerade State Games, North Carolina’s largest multi-sport festival and one of the largest state games programs in the United States. Approximately 15,000 athletes competed in 27 different summer sports over the weekend at various locations all around Charlotte.

Opening ceremonies were held at NASCAR’s Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte and the Tae Kwon Do competition was held in Huntersville, N.C.

Ray Smith’s Tae Kwon Do won 56 medals, including 26 gold medals, during the event.

The Summerville school also brought home the first place team award.

Athletes had the opportunity to compete in four categories: Boards, Forms, Sparring and Creative Weapon.
