For many high school juniors and seniors, the coming of spring represents flowers in bloom, proms and graduations.

For 16 young ladies from Summerville, Dorchester County and Berkeley County, it represented something just as important: Cotillion.

The Summerville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. held its bi-annual cotillion event May 3. The 2014 Cotillion Grande Ball was held at the Trident Technical College Conference Center in North Charleston.

The event was hosted by Jocelyn Steele, Live 5 News Weekend Anchor.

The theme of this event was “Roses and Rubies: Cultivated through Excellence.”

Over 350 guests attended this event.

The Summerville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was proud to present the following debutantes into society:

Aubrey Bell, a senior at Ashley Ridge High School; Alexis Brown, a junior at Ft. Dorchester High School; Madison Brown, a senior at Summerville High School; Jatae Bryant, a junior at Ft. Dorchester High School; Ariel Glover, a junior at Ashley Ridge High School; Victoria Glover, a senior at Summerville High School; NaKayla Horlback, a senior at Goose Creek High School; TeShaylia Kitt, a junior at Ashley Ridge High School; Courtney Michael, a junior at Ashley Ridge High School; Chayla Moore, a junior at Ft. Dorchester High School; Michaela Moultrie, a junior at Summerville High School; Simone Mouzon, a junior at Goose Creek High School; Kataya Parson, a senior at Woodland High School; Kelcey Pean, a junior at Ft. Dorchester High School; Nevada Sellers, a senior at Ashley Ridge High School and Lauren Singleton, a junior at Ashley Ridge High School.

Madison Brown was named Miss Cotillion 2014.

Ariel Glover was first runner-up and Alexis Brown received second runner-up.

Additional awards received that night were Community Service Award (Ariel Glover), Scrapbooking Award (Courtney Michael), Miss Congeniality Award (Michaela Moultrie) and the President’s Choice Award (Simone Mouzon).

The purpose of this cotillion was to introduce 16 beautiful, talented and socially conscious young ladies into society and to raise money to fund scholarships that will be awarded to deserving youths in the sorority’s service areas of upper and lower Dorchester County. The participants of the 2014 Cotillion and the 2014 Cotillion Committee worked very hard to meet and exceed its fundraising goals.

To prepare for their big night, the debutantes participated in a series of workshops designed to cultivate their leadership skills, time management abilities, etiquette and dance techniques, health and wellness, basic finance and college life skills.
