Taryn Wetherington, a rising junior vocal performance major at Charleston Southern University, has advanced to the semifinal round of competition in the inaugural year of the National Student Auditions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Wetherington is a student of Dr. Jill Terhaar Lewis, Associate Professor of Voice.

More than 400 students competed in the preliminary round of competition. That group was narrowed to 156 semifinalists.

Wetherington will compete in the Lower College/Private Women category for classical singers in the freshmen and sophomore level of college or private study which was determined by a preliminary round of competition through video submission.

Students submitted a number of videos of solo singing with piano accompaniment that were posted publicly on YouTube.com for NATS member judges to view and score.

At the Mid-Atlantic Region Student Auditions, Wetherington also earned a first place win in the College Sophomore Women Category. The Semifinal Round will be held in Boston at the 53rd NATS National Conference on July 6. The Final Round will be the following day.

Winners in the college category will receive a prize of $2,000 for first place and $1,500 for second.
