Lisa Valentine has started in her new role as chief executive officer at Summerville Medical Center (SMC) just as the hospital starts construction on a 40,000-square-foot medical office building that will provide a platform for the hospital to grow with the community. “It’s a great opportunity for a new CEO to come in and have this kind of strategic investment lined up and ready to go,” says Valentine, who officially joined SMC on May 1 and who led the June 25 groundbreaking for the $8 million complex. Valentine previously served as the chief operating officer and interim chief executive officer at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital in Richmond, Va., where she led the development of a 95,000-square-foot medical office building. “I understand, in real terms, the value that a medical office building brings to the medical community and the community at large.” Having a medical office building connected to the main hospital provides convenience and efficiency for both physicians and patients. For example, after visiting a doctor’s office at the medical office building, a patient will be able to easily access additional services such as radiology and other testing at the hospital without walking outdoors. Likewise, a doctor can go back and forth from the office to the hospital easily. “We think this project will do very well and will be a popular location for our physician community.” Further, it will allow the community access to a wider number of services close to home. The recruitment team is already talking with a variety of physicians, from primary care to medical and surgical specialists. Some may want to relocate to the medical office building, while others will likely expand their current practices to better reach the people of Summerville and the surrounding area. The medical office building will be owned by HCA, the parent company of Summerville Medical Center. Lee & Associates is overseeing the structure’s leasing. The construction project, which is being developed by Barton Malow, is expected to be complete in spring of 2015. Plans also include adding more parking. Valentine’s experience also will be valuable to the hospital as it navigates the complexities of construction. “I will say, however, that we’ve got a great team here, and so folks like Terry Cunningham, the vice president of operations, and Wallace Hall, who is our director of engineering, and others will be critical to making sure that we have a successful project at the end of the day,” she says. Cunningham credits former CEO Lou Caputo for moving the project forward before she arrived. During his four years at SMC, Caputo helped transform the hospital into an acute-care specialty medical center. This spring, he relocated to TriStar StoneCrest Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. Valentine spent much of her first month on the job in Summerville getting to know the staff, physicians and services of the hospital better.
