The Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a phone scam from people impersonating law enforcement and demanding money.
Chief Deputy Sam Richardson said the office has gotten several complaints from people who say they got a call from someone claiming to be a Sgt. or Capt. Wade or a Lt. Brakk from the Berkeley County Warrants Division.
The caller tells the victim he didn’t show up for jury duty and now there’s a warrant for his arrest.
The caller then says the victim must buy a prepaid debit card from a drug store and call back with the card number; otherwise the victim will be jailed.
Richardson said this is a phone scam.
